09:06 pm - New Battle for Blair Mountain
I've recently got interested in the West Virginia Mine War, to be horrified that there is a new battle for Blair Mountain, the site of the miners' uprising (some call it the largest civil uprising after the American Civil War). It's an event which is often glossed over in history teaching. Historic site status (which the landowners didn't like, unsurprisingly) has been revoked to allow strip-mining/mountaintop removal. There was a commemorative march this summer for the 90th anniversary of the battle. Some familiar faces took part, at least in image: pocket-sized heroic young police chief Sid Hatfield and his friend Ed Chambers. This looks like a deliberate attempt to physically eradicate working class history (there is still battle archaeology: bomb and bullet remains, & c.), as well as an environmental disaster. There is an ongoing campaign to save the site.
